iPhone app store winners & losers

July 10th, 2008

The iPhone app store launched early today.  Read more at The Unofficial Apple Weblog about how to get it up and running.

My first impressions:

Winners

EverNote
A free alternative to OmniFocus.  It admittedly lacks some of the GTD-power of OmniFocus, but it looks to easily  be the best free app in that field.

CheckWord
For Scrabble enthusiasts like myself, this is a must have.  Now my friends and I don’t need to hunt down a dictionary when we argue over plays.

Shazam
Frankly one of the few truly “innovative” apps on here.  You can hold your iPhone up to a speaker and it will recgonize what song is playing.

Losers

A $.99 Flash-light App?  When there’s a free one?  Does this even need to be an app?

How many to-do lists do we need?

New look for the site

July 6th, 2008

I finally put together a new look for SnapTortoise and was able to post most of the new content I’d been working on for the “services” section.  I’ve also lazily updated the blog to use the same stylesheets.  I like the cleanliness of it.  Eventually I’ll tweak the blog CSS to differ a bit from the main site.

Hacking my coffee machine is where I draw the line

It turns out the Jura F90 Coffee Maker may have some unpatchable security issues that would allow anyone to hack into it and ruin your perfect brew.
